Is this excerpt OK for a 15 year old writer?

It's quite good. I am an editor for a children's magazine, and this sounds like an excerpt from a well-written novel for kids. Keep writing (and don;t pay any mind to the naysayers...'Top Contributor' tells you what you need to know....that the person has no life!)
