What does it mean when a cat turns into a man?

Some Native Americans call this shape-shifting. I talked to one who told such a story but it had a tragic ending. One Native saw a huge owl sitting on the hood of his car, owls are a bad omen for most (including some non-Natives here in Oklahoma) tribes. He went in the house and got his gun and shot it and there laid a man. I told him I never heard that before, did it get in the news. He said it wasn't something that they liked to publicize. I don't know if alcohol or drugs were involved or any other details.
